Nudes by David Lynch, Thames & Hudson, US $65.00, Pp 240, June 2018, ISBN 978-2869251397
David Lynch is a leading American film director, actor, musician, painter, and photographer. As he is a towering filmmaker, his paintings and photographs have received less attention than they deserve. His interest in painting and sculpture can be traced to his childhood but he turned his attention to photography after he made Eraserhead in the 1970s. In 2007, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris hosted the exhibition ‘David Lynch,’ showcasing for the first time David Lynch’s vast ensemble of artworks. Later, David Lynch took part in several exhibitions hosted by Fondation Cartier hosted such as ‘Mathematics,’ ‘A Beautiful Elsewhere.’ Later, Fondation Cartier published these projects in the form of books — The Air is in the Fire (2007), Snowmen (2007), and Works on Paper (2011).
In David Lynch, Nudes, the Fondation Cartier has published a large selection of David Lynch’s photographs, ten years after his monographic exhibition The Air Is on Fire. Many of his photographs are devoted to the female nudes, and most of these have never been published before. David Lynch, Nudes features some 125 black-and-white and color images of feminine nudes, many of them were never published before. The title of the collection may suggest it is a collection of photographs of naked women. But Lynch seems to explore the female form and body in these photographs with the eyes of an artist. In David Lynch, Nudes, he uses the same techniques to explore the female body as he used to show factories in his documentary ‘Lynch (One)’ where darkness defines the objects. Lynch says, “I like to photograph naked women… The infinite variety of the human body is fascinating: it is amazing and magic to see how different women are.”
David Lynch used his painter’s eyes when he took these photographs. Many of these photographs fall into the category of abstract art. Many of these images hardly come across as human bodies at first glance. They tell us how an artist who is fascinated with the female body perceives their body. David Lynch looks at the female bodies from unique perspectives and angles few do. David Lynch, Nudes is a must-have for all students and practitioners of photography and painting. David Lynch, Nudes will change the way you perceive female bodies. This beautifully-manufactured book itself is a piece of art.
